I prefer the American dub for:
  • Dragon Ball Z (Sabat's directing added a lot of character & he did an outstanding job with Kai; Japanese one is alright - it's old-fashioned 80's-esque)
  • Pokemon (up until Advance; you can tell it was a little hard for Ash's VA in the beginning but she got much better ofc)
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! (Dan Green & the rest of the cast give the characters unique personalities)
  • Rurouni Kenshin (Kenshin's VA did a great job with saying "Oro?" like the Japanese seiyuu & sounded humble w/o being as feminine)
  • Digimon (Season 1; they got progressively better & did a great job with the First Movie)

Gundam 00 had a decent American dub, but the original dub = excellent!  I never really watch Inu Yasha but I thought that was alright.

Evangelion has a crappy American dub but the seiyuus do a really good job!

The original is usually the best though. I mean, what better way to express your own culture than with your own language?  You don't lose meaning in translation either. ^_^

I especially prefere Naruto in Japanese.

I do not care for Bleach in Japanese and it is very close between the English and Japanese voices. But in Bleach alot of the Japanese voice for different characters sounds too alike and if their face isn't onscreen it is hard to tell who is saying what sometimes.

But I like DBZ and Deathnote and Fullmetal Alchemist in English. It really depends from anime to anime which is better.

I'm watching Hajime No Ippo in English right now. It is hilarious. I wouldn't wanna watch that in Japanese.

HunterxHunter was good in Japanese.

I'll prolly watch the new HunterxHunter in Japanese too.

Deathnote and YGO I prefer in English. Too many distinct voices.

Death Note & especially Hajime no Ippo are fncking horrible in English. What the hell are you doing.  Watch Ippo in Japanese at least.  The characters are waaaay better defined by those voices.

For me, I think it has nothing to do with the language, just the voice actors themselves. Some voice actors are awesome, some suck. Here is a good example:
Naruto in english is ouch worthy horrible, but Kakashi is badass sounding. In Japanese version Naruto is less annoying and Kakashi is less badass sounding.
Here is what I find holds true most of the time:
In English Annoying characters are TOO annoying. Calm, cool, and collected characters are awesome. Cute characters are somewhat awkward. Sexy characters are awkward. Violent characters are awesome. Evil villains are decent.
In Japanese annoying characters are tolerable. Calm, cool, and collected characters are too normal. Cute characters are very cute. Sexy characters are awkward (seriously, haven't heard a sexy voice actor for an anime ever (**** doesn't count), it just sounds wierd). Violent characters are not as awesome (but still awesome). Evil villains are amazing.

Eventually this became too much of a point of contention for me so stopped watching anime and went to manga. Hell even when I go back and watch my classic favorites I notice some bad voices for certain characters (Roshi really sounded like that? wtf was I on? (but DAAAAAAAAAMN THAT VAGETTA VOICE IS THE ****!).

I guess it really does depend on the voice. Which is scary when people try to do a live action movie. D:

I'm currently watching Japanese Bleach on Crunchy roll and English Hajime No Ippo on WiiU Browser.and I like them very much. I am also watching Naruto Shippuden in Japanese on crunchy roll. I like the voices ok for that one I guess.

Ippo in Engrish, Trainer is not bad.

Areufuknsrs English Hajime no Ippo is ass...

But I definitely agree that it all depends on the voice actor.  Like how Goku is so different between Japan & Funimation, but both are respectable.

Rurouni Kenshin's dub was pretty good!  I love how the English voice actor for Kenshin could do the ol' "Oro?" much like the original seiyuu while making Kenshin sound less like a pnssy-b!tch normally!

This is precisely how I feel about J-dubs vs A-dubs.Dracian has hit it almost directly spot on IMHO.

For me, it depends usually, on what I start viewing the show originally in.

Evangelion I watched when it was first aired in Australia, and had all the english dubbing, so now it doesn't feel right when I watch it without. (Also Japanese Shinji sounds like even MORE of a whingey ****)

However some things, usually films, I've watched with subtitles, and with Japanese audio. So when I try with English dubs, it doesn't sound right.

The New HunterxHunter anime is so good. And Shippuden is getting so good. 3 days until crunchy roll updates for both.

It's been so long since I've watched anime. I've been reading manga exclusively for so long that I completely prefer it. Shippuden is nuts right now. Madara is crazy lol. Naruto dies. OOPS SPOILERS! HAHAHA just kidding, he is in the process of dying...

8I The English dub is... smh (but that's my own opinion). It feels like one of those "generic" dubs that just don't quiiite settle well with me. I saw my first episode in English & I just quit, BUT that's when I searched for the subs online.

It's totally understandable though.  And either way, it's about appreciating the story. I don't have a series myself that doesn't sound right because I'm used to one dub over the other.
