It seems like they are possessed but they really aren't. And another good example is Misa. She didn't act possessed because she wasn't and she didn't have an incredible lust for power. Just wasn't her personality.

The Manga and Anime both say and is written that the owner of the death note is possessed by the Shinigami. So no matter what you say it is part of the story and cannot be rationalized any other way because it is explained this way in the story and written in the pages the of the death note. The reason Misa didn't act like Light is because yes they are different minded but Rem acts way different from Ryuk.
