Um, well I train just fine. I've got to put 100 hours into these games to catch up. Wasn't like back in the day where I knew everything about Pokémon. Card games and video game. Brings back bittersweet childhood memories...

No.  You don't get it.

EV Training.  Working specific stats in training.

And when I mean "born stats," I mean IV values.

EVs were around even since R/B/Y, but there wasn't much to them.  It was just "train against as many low level Pokemon as possible to build points," and allowed maximization of all stats, unlike now where builds require different point allocations
(making team building more strategic).

That's what Serebii's for.  I made a mention for this after I read how some guy's comment scared you on Serebii @ 3DS Thread
(after you're review).

I think it's gimmicky **** but okay I'll look into it.

It's not what you're used to, but it's straight-up data.

I recommend EV training as you go along in the game.  It's not that hard and is very possible - I did this myself.  HG/SS mainly Trainers with Pokemon that will feed your Speed, which is great for your Cyndaquil, or any other fast Pokemon.

___

Here is a short, simplified explanation on EVs.  I'm sure this will help you!

  • Rattata is the 1st form of its line that excels in Speed (compared to its other stats).  This thing gives 1 Speed EV.
  • Gyarados is the 2nd form of its line.  It's renowned for its high Attack.  Therefore, it rewards 2 Attack EVs upon its defeat.
  • Alakazam is the 3rd and final form of a bra.  Its best at hitting hard with Special attacks, and fittingly provides 3 Special Attack EVs.

Knowing that a Pokemon's evolutionary stage is what determines the points it gives, it is actually smarter to beat lower-level Pokemon to accumulate more points.  That way, when your Pokemon levels up, it will gain a bigger boost.  No longer will you see the mere +3's you're used to, but you'll be treated to +5's (or more) as a standard.  Gaining at least 2 more points every level over an extended period shows major differences in your party's stats.

Say you want to make a fast, physical attacker
(like Red Gyarados).  To make Red Gyarados stronger and faster, it should face other Pokemon that are also strong or fast.  So, it's suitable for Red Gyarados to pound little Rattatas (Speed) or fiercely battle other Gyarados (Attack).

Of course, your bulky Pokemon
(Swampert, Skarmory, and even Gyarados) should train on things like Metapods or Cloysters for Defense and Clefairy or Jigglypuff for HP.

Marriland's Pokedex lists every Pokemon's EVs at the end of the "Additional Data" of its respective page.

Side note: If you think about it, just about everyone trains through Elite Four runs.  Once their team reaches satisfying levels, they say their team is powerful... when really, it's just high-leveled.  If you pay attention to what you're defeating (like in the Red Gyara example above), you could have a team 10 levels lower and still kill the enemy party easily.

Look at it logically.  Fighting something fast will force your Pokemon to be fast too.  Fighting something physically strong encourages muscle growth in your Pokemon.  Train on such Pokemon accordingly.

OMG I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT VITAMINS.

It's recommend to feed AS MANY vitamins as possible to your Pokemon before you train.  I recommend 10x
(the limit for each stat) in 2 stats.  DO NOT feed vitamins that do not support an already strong stat of a Pokemon (i.e. Feeding Carbos to Snorlax).  Vitamins are technically 10 EVs, and you don't want to take up the EV limit (512) on "useless" stats.

And it's not that bad, Tye.   Soul Silver's Trainers have mostly Speed and Attack Pokemon to train on, so you won't need to keep switching for every Trainer.  I went through the game like this.   And it wasn't a hassle, really.

Nah.  If you run a fast, physically powerful team, you can go through the game swiftly.  Does make it easier if your stats are well distributed, right?

I didn't give much thought to them 'cause I knew you just started then.

Speed?  Typhlosion has that.  Its defenses and HP, you don't needa worry...

Lugia > Ho-Oh.  An adequately trained Lugia with Roost & Reflect is very hard to take down.
I think Lugia looks cooler anyway.   Never dug Ho-Oh.   But I like it better now.

In my heart/soul guide book the stats of the 3 are:
           Meganium
Hp.      3
Atk.     3
Def.     4
S.Atk.  4
S.Def.  4
Spd.    4

          Typhlosion
Hp.      3 or was it 2
Atk.     4
Def.     3
S.Atk.  5 or was it 4
S.Def.  3
Spd.    4

          Feraligator
Hp.      3
Atk.     4
Def.     4
S.Atk.  3
S.Def.  3
Spd.    3

You can see Feraligator comes out shafted here.
Meganium is well balanced kinda like Kingdra.

Oh hey Trainer?
If I wanna build a team of:
Draginite
Salamence
Garchomp
Tyranitar
Arcanine

who would you recommend to accompany them
Kingdra?
or
Walrein?

Water/dragon?
or
Water/Ice?

Ice doesn't weaken Rock right?

Can't have FOUR pkmn in my team weak against the same ****.

I'm swaping my Feraligator's Surf with Waterfall and giving Nidoking Surf.
Nidoking's S.Atk is impressive.

I decided not to use magmar or Larvatar in this game. Ima breed Larvatar for another game.
On my pearl I have hatched a level 1 magby, elekid, hounor, feebas, magikarp, togepi, Bagon,
Gonna get that Larvatar and dratini too.
Then I have to decide which of these 6 I use in platinum when I start it.

If only Dragonair could lesrn Fly. Togekiss has really good stats. Looks like an extreme frisby.

Lol. That's why I chose Cyndaquil. I know Lugia is better. That why I bought SoulSilver. But I forgot that HeartGold has Lugia LV. 70 and Kyogre. I don't want Ho-oh and Groudon because I already have a solid Fire type.

@arktic

You NEVER follow the broadened information in strategy guides.  When base stats are divided into 5 levels, it's too broad to tell what the actual base statsare.  Marriland, Serebii, etc. most online Pokedexs will provide accurate, straight-up numbers.

It's stats are all around decent and barely make "4."  It is defensive, but there are many better walls, by virtue of stats and types.  You're forgetting to count move pools in judging the starters as well.  Meganium's moves are quite limited.  With its all-around actual mediocre stats, it just doesn't do much.

Feraligatr is actually the best of the bunch.  It can learn the amazing Swords Dance, and has access to a STAB priority move - Aqua Jet - if bred.  Waterfall acts as its main attack, along with Earthquake or Return.  Considering its Attack is high
(109 base Attack?), it can deal some hurt. 8]  Water is also a great type for attacks because it usually isn't resisted.
___

This is for Heart Gold, right?  Because if it was for Black...
A 5th Gen. Cloyster with Skill Link will really hurt your team.  Cloyster's Ice Spear is overpowered for a wall
(calculating STAB, it turns out to be near 200 or so), and it's even worse because half of your team is weak to it.

Walrein is dumb-lookin'. :B BAH WALREIN.
Waterfall, Outrage, plus Hydro Pump (to hit physical walls) makes Kingdra deadly, especially after Dragon Dances or during rain.
Choice is obvious.

Ice is not super effective on Rock.

I'm not sure what you mean by 4 members weak to the same ****, because Kingdra is neutral towards Ice
(Water/Dragon).

Feraligatr should always have Waterfall as its main move.  It's a physical attacker.  Nidoking's SpA is OK.  Its fit to be a mixed attacker.

Togekiss is good.  Air Slash hax with Serene Grace so much...

Yeah, I meant my 3 dragons are weak to ice and I didn't want rock to take major damage from ice too.

But pupitar is ground too so... suckage.

I was leaning towards Kingdra, cause I don't have a spheal anyway.

I wish Feraligator learned Aqua tail much earlier.

I like Ice fang with him too.
Waterfall
Ice Fang
Crunch
Dig
I don't have any better tms yet.

I had to hatch 35 togepi eggs before I got a female togepi with serene grace.
That process sucked.
